Getting some updates done.
All new publication list is online.
Updated my conference presentations.
Will fill in the details soon!

New projekt - funded by the Austrian national bank - started in March 2014. Officially my part will start in coming october. It will be funny to see this come together!  (And yes I'm already working on it)

Some other things:

The project on foreign corrspendents led to a publication in this nice upcoming book:

Mapping Foreign Correspondence in Europe (Wow is november far off! Finished our part last December)

And also at the end of the year we should see a chapter titled "Bausteine des journalistischen Selbstbilds. Überlegungen zum Zusammenhang von Habitus, Praxis und Feldstrukturen im österreichischen Journalismus.“ by Susanne Kirchhoff and myself in the following book: Wimmer, Jeffrey / Riesmeyer, Claudia /Maier, Tanja / Hartmann, Maren (Hrsg.) (2014): Medien-Arbeit im Wandel. Wiesbaden: Springer VS.

In July I'll be at Tampere for the ACS Crossroads and Yokohama für the ISA worldcongress :)

A new kind of post... a short statement about myself. (German Prosa)

Plagiat

Because the science guys have a problem to understand science...

In my discussions with friends working in physics or IT it often comes to the point where we  realize that the people working in the hard sciences have a problem to understand how social sciences work...

Here is my advise - read this one:
Was-ist-Soziologie / Norbert Elias (German Edition)
or
What-is-Sociology / Norbert Elias (English language edition)

and add a dash of

Jeffrey C. Alexander's essay on the centrality of the classics found in the 1987 edition of Social Theory Today

Teaching ...

Here is an overview regarding my teaching experience. It gives a good overview over my core competences as well as my interests in research and teaching.

Sociology related courses were all held at the University of Linz, the communication realeted ones at the University of Salzburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Kufstein, and the one in the educational sciences was at the University of Innsbruck

New Articles in English

Okay in the last few month I was working hard to secure funding for a research project. As it is still unclear, if the proposal will go through I do a updte on a few publications that may be of interest:

First of all my ongoing work on Women in the Austrian Media led to a paper in the "Catalan Journal of Communication & Cultural Studies"

Young female journalists in Austria’s journalists’ union: Part of the working poor?

It is about the results of our departments 2010/2011 research project on living conditions of Austrian Journalists.

This is closly related to a secondly a paper based on the projects I have completed with Roman Hummel and Susanne Kirchhoff has been published in the new "Journal of Applied Journalism & Media Studies".

Changes in media, changes in the profession? The shifts of the journalistic field as a challenge for young Austrian journalists

Mainly about working conditions of journalists in Austria, who view their job as a creative profession with little need for formal education, and insist on the importance of personal networks. Despite this, the younger and female journalists are more likely to educate themselves in hopes of finding a permanent job. It was written by Susanne and myself, with valuable input from project leader Roman Hummel.

And going hand in hand with those:

Here is the link to the paper on the percieved value of Education in the Austrian journalism landscape. It was originally presented at the third World Journalism Education Congress, which was held earlier this summer in Mechelen, Belgium. The conferencepaper was reviewed and the article is available online at the conference site - or here:

Which Education for Which Journalism under Which Circumstances?

Okay my dissertation is progressing and the first 10 days lead to 573 datasets!

YES - already passed the minimum number of completed datasets I needed for my thesis, and already past the halfway point of a good large data set ;)

Thanks to the Johannes Kepler University Linz and Paris Lodron University Salzburg!
Yeah IGN does not really do journalistic work. But those memes are getting really interesting for me.
Can special interest media even do "journalism" and survive?

Okay... The mighty GAF has even a gooooood long thread on the whole issue of gaming journalism!

Young female journalists - a favourite topic of mine...

Yesterday the newest edition of Momentum Quarterly was published.
And it contains a peer-reviewed article in German by Martina and me.

We are proud to have it published in a starting open access journal.

Look it up: "Jung, weiblich und Journalistin: Endstation Prekrariat?"

Oxford and journalism ethics

Just a short heads up...
We - that is Roman Hummel, Susanne Kirchhoff and me, Dimitri Prandner - were at the" Journalism Ethics: Individual, institutional or cultural?" and presented our paper that gave insight to some of the more pressing issues in Austrian journalism regarding ethics and regulation.

Book Review (German) - Conflict, Citizenship and Civil Society

This is short book review regarding the following collection:

Baert, Patrick, Sokratis M. Koniordos, Giovanna Procacci u. Carlo Ruzza (Ed.):
Conflict, Citizenship and Civil Society;
Routledge, New York 2010

Sorry that the review is in German, but in short: It's a great collection on the current discussion on citizenship issues in Europe, even if a bit more cohesion would have been great.

Full papers and the blog

In the future I will offer some full papers on the blog, as long as they are not firmly rooted in the social sciences and may be primarly interesting people outside the academia.

They will all be under creative commons and I invite everybody to read and cite them. Enjoy them and feel free to provide feedback!

Finally my copy of the collected edition "Soziale Ungleicheit und soziales Kapital" arrived in Salzburg :)

The paper of Martina and I is to befound on pages 91 to 96 and I'm proud of the short chapter detailing why young and female journalists have to fight against structural challanges in the Austrian journalistic field.

The longer, follow up article "Jung, weiblich, Journalistin: Endstation Prekariat?" which was written by the same team over the last few month will be published in the "Momentum Quarterly" journal soon.

Batman and Identity...

Claiming the cowl – Dick Grayson’s Batman as seen by the online community ‘Scans_daily’

Abstract

To fight his war on crime Bruce Wayne created the identity of Batman, but decades of publication history led to several other characters donning the legendary cape and cowl. The latest of those was Dick Grayson, once the first Robin and later Nightwing, who claimed the Batman’s mask in 2009, after his predecessor disappeared and writer Grant Morrison explored the idea if Batman can truly be more than the man behind the cowl.
But how did the fans react to this change? A comprehensive analysis, based on a sample of thematically relevant comments and postings written during Grayson’s time as Batman at the webpage of the comic book fan community ‘Scans_daily’ tries to both answer this question, as well as identify distinctive groups of fans reacting especially strong to the changes in the Batmen’s world.

Originally planed for a peer-reviewed, non-scientific publication I decided to post it here and offer it under creative commons guidelines for everyone. Be aware that while it was reviewed and adjusted to peer-feedback it is only scientifically informed, but in no way a scientific article!
